news > 16 october 2005 World Anti-McDonalds Day, London DemonstrationTwenty protesters took part in a mobile demonstration against McDonalds for World anti-McDonalds day. Some protesters travelled from as far as Bedfordshire to offer their solidarity. Thousands of "What's Wrong With McDonalds?" and anti-meat leaflets were handed out. We had a fantastic response from the public, many of whom came up to ask us about the demonstration, and some people who had planned to eat at McDonalds, read their leaflets and turned away. We had three banners and wore placards, covering the many reasons why we were protesting against McDonalds. Several tourists took photographs of the demonstration as they walked past - we became quite a tourist attraction! The demonstration started out at the Leicester Square McDonalds, and moved on to Shaftesbury Avenue and then Regents Street McDonalds. At Leicester Square, a few protesters went into the "restaurant" to put leaflets on the tables while people were eating. This was an effective way to put them off their dead flesh. At Shaftesbury Avenue, we made a lot of noise and hardly any members of the public entered McDonalds while we were there! Seeing the success of our demonstration, the Manager over-reacted and contacted the Police, who issued a section 14 to move us on. Regent Street was by far the busiest area, where we continued to hand out leaflets and made a lot of noise. At the end of the demonstration, protesters ran down stairs, into the eating area of the Regent Street McDonalds, put leaflets over the tables and continued to make a lot of noise. It is hard to know what the customers thought of that, but we certainly made an impression and would have sparked off a bit of discussion! All in all, it was a successful, memorable and inspiring demonstration! There are regular anti-McDonalds demonstrations every Thursday from 6pm - 7.30pm on Shaftesbury Avenue. Please, join us!
