news > 6 May 2006 Live Exports March in DoverSat 6 May saw hundreds of people march in Dover against the resumption of live export of calves, and against all live exports. The march was vibrant, loud and passionate. The day started with speeches from Viva!, Animal Aid, the Vegan Society, CIWF and the Green Party. One of the most important points put across was that taking a vegan diet is one of the most effective ways of stopping live exports. The calves that are sent abroad are a 'waste product' of the milk industry. In order to keep cows producing milk, they must be made pregnant each year. The male calves born are 'worthless' if sold over here, so farmers now look to export them to other countries where they will be confined to veal crates (veal crates are banned in the UK). After the speeches on the sea front, the march began, going straight through the town centre and ending up at the Dover docks. There were around 700 people marching, and the march took place the day after the first shipment of calves had been exported to Europe. The day finished with a rally at the docks. How you can help the campaign 1. Take part in protests at Dover. Kent Against Live Exports (KALE) hold demonstrations against live exports on the first Saturday of every month from 12pm-3pm at Eastern Docks Roundabout, Dover. Please contact KALE's information news line on 01304 204688 for more information. 2. Locally, promote veganism. Vegan Campaigns have many events coming up that you can join. If you live out of London you can find your local group on the Veggies, or LCAT websites, or work alone. The Vegan Society, Viva! and Animal Aid all produce excellent leaflets and booklets to promote veganism. |
