New Year, New You: Take the Vegan Pledge in 2009

For many people, January is detox month. In 2009, rather than a fad diet, why not join thousands of others in London and around the UK and try being vegan for a month. Vegan Campaigns is inviting 50 participants to meetings on 18th January and 15th February, which will include free before and after health checks from a GP.

As well as the opportunity to taste all kinds of vegan food, there will be talks, a cookery demonstration and a chance to ask all the questions you ever wondered about being vegan. There will also be advice on nutrition, and a free booklet of healthy recipes, shopping and dining tips to take away.

One billion animals are slaughtered every year in the UK. By going vegan an individual can save up to 4,000 animals over his or her lifetime. A major UN report found that animal farming is responsible for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than all transport combined.1 Going vegan can reduce the carbon impact of a person’s diet by 60 per cent.

"Studies show that vegans and vegetarians are at less risk of heart disease and obesity than those who eat meat and fish,” says Stephen Walsh PhD, author of Plant Based Nutrition and Health. “Vegans can easily obtain all their nutritional requirements by following some simple guidelines. Given the right choices vegan diets support good health and long life." What other diet has such overwhelmingly positive benefits?

Says Chrissy Leyland, Vegan Pledge organiser: “Being vegan is easy! There is an alternative to almost every animal product. Vegan foods – including non-dairy milk, cream, yoghurt, custard, cheese, ice-cream and much more – can now be found easily in high street shops and supermarkets. Most restaurants have a vegan option, and if not, the majority are prepared to adapt their dishes. So if you’ve been thinking about going vegan or you’d like to reduce your impact on the planet or improve your health – why not take the Vegan Pledge in 2009?”

Britain’s 250,000 vegans include such well-known faces as Benjamin Zephaniah, Martin Shaw and Heather Small.
